- About the festival
From the 5th of October until the 9th of October 2022 the 8th edition of the Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival took place. Every year ASFF makes a careful selection to showcase new trends of mainstream, independent, artistic and experimental Spanish films of that year. The program is intended to include the best films that Spanish cinema has to offer while offering our audiences a wide variety of options.
Once again we hosted our opening and closing nights at the beautiful Pathé Tuschinski. The other cinema’s where we celebrated the festival this year were the comfortable theatre of the OBA Oosterdok, the spectacular Eye Filmmuseum, and our newest venue: LAB111, a young and upcoming cultural center in Amsterdam Oost. By offering our films at this variety of venues, we hoped to reach a diverse audience, both in location and otherwise. With beautiful films, Spanish ham and drinks and above all our amazing team of staff and volunteers we did our best to make the festival an unforgettable experience for our public.
For the 8th edition, the Netflix-produced film Rainbow was selected as the opening film. We wanted to surprise our audience with this original story, which consists of a modern interpretation of the tale of The Wizard of Oz. For the screening, director Paco León and lead actress & singer Dora attended the screening. This turned the evening into a dynamic show with great interaction from the audience and live music from Dora.
The opening night was the beginning of this year’s 5-day long festival. Once again the festival combined both Spanish foods, drinks, renowned guests, and the best films that Spanish cinema has to offer, making sure that our guests had some unforgettable moments.
A total of 16 feature films and 4 short films were carefully selected for this year’s program. All films offered their own original view of what Spanish-spoken cinema is today. In the selection, a wide variety of social issues are examined, each with its own clear artistic approach.
The festival program shed light on both renowned and up-and-coming filmmakers. All of them add their own unique value to the culture of Spanish-spoken cinema. We did our best to include as many different kinds of voices as possible, to give our audience a broad view. Like this, we include female filmmakers, young filmmakers, established makers, and also an LGBTQIA+ focus program.
